"Over the years that dolphins have been kept in captivity, some have been released back into the wild after varying periods of time. During most of these early dolphin reintroductions, the animals were often taken from a tank and placed back in the bays close to the facilities. Some of these were display animals no longer of use to the facility. In all these cases there was no followup monitoring." (Bassos, 1993).
This document is dedicated to "Keiko", "Junior", "Tanouk" and "Lolita" , as well as the many smaller captive cetaceans which have been and are maintained in solitary confinement and inadequate facilities devoid of significant educational benefit to the public or conservation benefit to their species. They could be returned to the benefit of all.
For this preliminary summary, I have included anecdotal reports of releases of dolphins (including large species such as killer whales) from captivity by institutions and individuals which have maintained them in many parts of the world. I have also included a few examples of reintroductions of stranded cetaceans which provide useful background on followup documentation. But, it is not the astonishing durability and survival instinct of these animals in nature that is in question. Currently, a major point of contention in the issue of release or reinstatement of captive cetaceans is whether the dolphin or whale will readapt to catching live prey after it has been fed piecemeal in prolonged captivity. Another point of contention is whether released animals will spread acquired pathogens to the wild community, or have sufficient immunity from pathogens in the wild. And, a third point concerns the question of whether a released cetacean will readapt socially, or be condemned to a life of loneliness.
These points must be responsibly addressed; but, if post-captive release is lethal, dangerous and irresponsible, then why has it been done so many times by organizations that are generally considered responsible?
This is not intended to be an exhaustive list, and any additions or suggestions the reader can offer will be appreciated. Considering the worldwide, sometimes illegal and often unregulated trade in these animals, there undoubtedly have been other releases for institutional and business convenience which are not included herein. In the interest of proper historical documentation, I will list only those which have been published or have been reported to me firsthand by reliable sources. This does not include reports of approximately 20 dolphins that have been rehabilitated from stranding events and released back to the wild (NMFS records). It will be particularly useful in future editions of this publication to compile a list of releases of cetaceans that were examined by qualified veterinarians prior to release, and for which veterinary records (and/or specimen materials) may be available. This information, together with similarly compiled information from stranding events may yield useful epidemiological insights into the question of immunocompetence and introduction of 'captive acquired pathogens' to wild populations. The state of the art in telemetry and observational studies can in many cases reveal whether released animals fare well and are socially reinstated.
In the case of non-native introductions, DNA techniques may now be employed in studies of the host populations to reveal additional information concerning the genetic ramifications of non-native releases (eg. in The Bahamas Tursiops truncatus population; or in operational releases such as done by the U.S. Navy, other navies, and swim programs).
Whatever one's view on captivity may be, it is in the interest of humanitarian treatment of those animals which are no longer suitable for display, etc., to seriously examine release and reinstatement to the wild as an option for their retirement. In this respect, the genetic and immunological issues are important and should be objectively addressed; but, in a very real sense they represent spilt milk due to the common past practices of institutions the public has entrusted with the care of marine mammals.

This page has been prepared for the "UK Wildlife: First Aid and Care" Wildpro module, and is designed for the needs of the following species: Balaenoptera acutorostrata - Minke Whale, Delphinus delphis - Common dolphin, Globicephala melas - Long-finned pilot whale, Grampus griseus - Risso's dolphin, Lagenorhynchus acutus - Atlantic white-sided dolphin, Lagenorhynchus albirostris - White-beaked dolphin,  Orcinus orca - Killer whale, Phocoena phocoena - Common porpoise, Physeter macrocephalus - Sperm whale, Stenella coeruleoalba - Striped dolphin, Tursiops truncatus - Bottle-nosed dolphin.
These species are within the families Balaenopteridae, Delphinidae, Phocoenidae, Physeteridae.
Transport Container:
  • "It is strongly recommended that specialist equipment is used if attempting transportation of a cetacean." (D23)
  • "Suspended stretchers, air and water mattresses have all been used successfully to date." (D23
    • During transportation care should be taken to avoid excessive pressure on fins.
    • It should be possible to keep the skin moist and control the cetacean's body temperature.
    • It is important to ensure that the material on which the cetacean lies does not damage its sensitive skin and that it provides sufficient cushioning to prevent physical damage to the animal during transportation.
  • Stretchers are available which have been specifically designed for cetaceans. These have holes for the pectoral flippers, which need to be well padded.

Short term (Immediate/Emergency) Accommodation:
  • Inflatable pool may be erected at the site of a small stranded cetacean.
  • Requires a flat surface for its erection.
  • Require frequent pumping of sea water to keep the water in the pool replenished.
  • Allows initial refloating of a small cetacean e.g. if sea conditions are unsuitable for refloatation.

Medium-term (Hospitalisation) Accommodation:
  • Minimum requirements:
    • No more than two hours transport time from the stranding site.
    • Pool of at least 9 metres diameter, with padded sides.
    • Support systems available for animals in the water.
    • A salt water supply and full saltwater treatment equipment.
    • Controlled environment.
    • Isolation of the pool and its surroundings from the public.
    • Appropriate handling facilities.
    • Facilities for 24-hour observation of the casualty cetacean.
    • Experienced qualified personnel to staff the facility.

  • No suitable facilities are available in the UK at this time. (D42)
Long-term (Rehabilitation and Permanent) Accommodation:
  •  Not available in the UK at the present time. (D14).

  • The decision to move a stranded cetacean to a rehabilitation facility must be taken carefully with due consideration as to whether this is the most humane option for that animal. (D42)
  • Mobile pool may allow:
    • Delayed refloatation when sea conditions prohibit immediate refloatation. 
    • Improved veterinary assessment of the casualty. (D23)
    • Delayed refloatation for short term treatment of severely dehydrated individuals. (D42)
  • Rehabilitation accommodation, if available, may allow treatment for days to a few weeks and would be suitable for pelagic or coastal species of any age (not very large animals), including juveniles for hand-rearing, of poor to good (not emaciated) body condition, with some clinical signs of disease or with injuries requiring more than first aid treatment.(D23, D42)
  • Pool accommodation at a permanent facility would have to be an isolation pool (away from permanent residents) and a skilled team of personnel would also be required.(P24.335.w5)
  • Once inside a pool, cetaceans which have been stranded frequently require physical support for hours to days if they are to remain at the surface and upright (D44).
  • Cetaceans have delicate skin and care is required to avoid damage by transport containers.
  • There is a risk of the animal developing hyperthermia while in a transport container.
  • Two inflatable pools suitable for emergency use are available in the UK at present and are held at the RSPCA Norfolk Wildlife Hospital and Welsh Marine Life Rescue.
  • No suitable hospitalisation/rehabilitation accommodation for cetaceans is available in the UK at this time. (D42)
  • A high level of expertise is required; expert organisations must be contacted:
  • Accommodation for casualty wild animals should be designed to minimise the stress on the animal and to minimise the risk of injury to that animal.
  • A wild animal in captivity is protected under the same welfare legislation as domestic animals, e.g. Protection of Animals Acts 1911-2000; under this legislation it is an offence to treat a captive animal cruelly or to cause it unnecessary suffering.
    • This includes an obligation to provide proper attention and care.
    • The keeper has a duty to keep all wildlife casualties in a fit manner, in accommodation of a size which allows reasonable movement and with an environment suitable for its normal way of life.

  • Accommodation which does not fulfil the physiological and psychological requirements of the animal and results in an inadequate level of fitness at the time of release may seriously compromise the survival ability of that animal. Release of an animal which is unfit may be an offence under the Abandonment of Animals Act 1960. (J35.147.w1, W5.Jan01)
  • Risks to human health, both physical and risk of zoonotic illness must be minimised: Health and Safety at Work, etc. Act 1974.

    Τα περισσότερα δελφίνια που έχουν αιχμαλωτιστεί από τη θάλασσα, είναι δυνητικά απελευθερώσιμα, όχι όμως όλα. Μερικά έχουν παραμείνει στην αιχμαλωσία τόσο μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα, που όλες οι απαραίτητες φυσικές δεξιότητες για την επιβίωση έχουν χαθεί ανεπιστρεπτί. Το περιβάλλον είναι αυτό που καθορίζει τη συμπεριφορά. Και τα μη απελευθερώσιμα δελφίνια έχουν χάσει κάτι πολύ σημαντικό, κάτι που, αν μιλούσαμε για άνθρωπο, θα το λέγαμε "πνεύμα". Τα δελφίνια αυτά έχουν χάσει για πάντα ένα πολύ σημαντικό μέρος από τη ζωτική τους δύναμη, έχουν χάσει τη ψυχή τους. Γι' αυτά είναι ήδη πολύ αργά...
    Τα δελφίνια που έχουν γεννηθεί στην αιχμαλωσία ΔΕΝ είναι απελευθερώσιμα. Επιστροφή στο φυσικό περιβάλλον δεν υπάρχει γι' αυτά. Γιατί απλούστατα δεν έχουν κανένα... 
    Ένα δελφίνι μπορεί να θεωρηθεί δυνητικά απελευθερώσιμο αν ανταποκρίνεται στις παρακάτω προδιαγραφές: 1) Είναι καλά στη υγεία του και σε καλή φυσική κατάσταση, 2) Έχει ανακτήσει την ικανότητα να χρησιμοποιεί το σόναρ του, 3) Έχει ανακτήσει την ικανότητά του να κυνηγάει ζωντανά ψάρια με το σύστημα του ηχοεντοπισμού, και 4) Μπορεί να ανταπεξέλθει σε ενδεχόμενη επίθεση από καρχαρίες.  
    Ένα δελφίνι μπορεί να φαίνεται σα να θέλει να γίνει "pet". Μοιάζει σα να είναι πάντοτε χαμογελαστό, σα να θέλει να παίξει με τους ανθρώπους. Όμως αυτό δεν είναι παρά μια ψευδαίσθηση. Τα άγρια ζώα, ακόμη και κάτω από συνθήκες αιχμαλωσίας, παραμένουν για πάντα άγρια, έτσι τα έχει φτειάξει η φύση. Αυτό βεβαίως δε σημαίνει ότι όλα τα αιχμάλωτα άγρια ζώα θα μπορούσαν ή θα έπρεπε να απελευθερωθούν. Μόνον σε ορισμένα από αυτά η "αλλοτρίωση" που τους έχει προκαλέσει η ζωή στην αιχμαλωσία είναι επανορθώσιμη. Τα υπόλοιπα έχουν χάσει οριστικά αυτή την ευκαιρία. ΟΜΩΣ ΟΛΑ τα δελφίνια ΔΙΚΑΙΟΥΝΤΑΙ και μπορούν να προσαρμοστούν σε ένα κάπως πιο φυσικό περιβάλλον, όλα τα αιχμάλωτα δελφίνια δικαιούνται και μπορούν να βγούν από τις πισίνες των δελφιναρίων και να ζήσουν, για παράδειγμα, σε μια λιμνοθάλασσα ή σε έναν περιφραγμένο θαλάσσιο όρμο. Εκεί θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να βιώσουν ξανά τους φυσικούς τους ρυθμούς, να έρθουν και πάλι σε επαφή με τα θαλάσσια ρεύματα, και να συναντήσουν ξανά την αληθινή ζωή και τα ζωντανά ψάρια. Κάτι τέτοιο θα ήταν γι' αυτά θεραπευτικό και θα μπορούσε να βελτιώσει την ποιότητα της ζωής τους. Και αυτή είναι η μόνη αποζημίωση, και η μόνη αποκατάσταση που, σαν υπεύθυνοι άνθρωποι, μπορούμε να τους προσφέρουμε.  
    Όπως λέει και ο Louie Psihoyos, για τα αιχμάλωτα δελφίνια υπάρχουν δύο τρόποι διάσωσης: Είτε να επιστρέψουν εκεί όπου γεννήθηκαν και μεγάλωσαν, είτε να ζήσουν σε κάποιο φυσικό καταφύγιο - όρμο, όπου σταδιακά θα εγκλιματιστούν και θα επιδείξουν τη φυσική τους συμπεριφορά μέσα στη θάλασσα (Εφημερίδα Πρώτο Θέμα, σελ. 54).
    Ένα από τα πιο κοινά (και τα πιο κουτά) επιχειρήματα των δελφιναρίων είναι ότι, αν τα δελφίνια τους αφεθούν στη θάλασσα, δεν θα επιβιώσουν. Αυτό δεν μπορεί να αποτελέσει δικαιολογία σε καμία περίπτωση. Γιατί αν αυτό το επιχείρημα είχε βάση, τότε οι μη απελευθερώσιμες αρκούδες θα έπρεπε να είναι με το χαλκά στη μύτη και να χορεύουν ακόμα...
